Hampshire is where it all began for RicNic, way back in 2004, when a small group of teenagers (including trustee Ben Nicholls) got together and decided to put on a show - all on their own.
Now a key plank of the summer programme at Winchester's Theatre Royal, RicNic Hampshire is in its fourteenth year - and what a year it's set to be! Performing West Side Story between 23rd - 26th August, this year's team have been hard at work whipping their fantastic company (a great mix of old and new hands) into shape. We popped down to Winchester to take a sneak peek!
West Side Story is a compelling tale of doomed romance blossoming against an urban backdrop of gang rivalry and ethnic tension; an adaptation that brings the themes of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to 1950s New York. 2017 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the original production - but though the material is now familiar, it's still incredibly powerful.
Nominated for six Tony awards, the original 1957 production of West Side Story was directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins (with a book by Arthur Laurents and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim). The famous film - following a few years later in 1961 - starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Rita Moreno and George Chakris, bagged ten Academy Awards. We're pleased to say that our young Hampshire company are giving the great stars of the '50s and '60s a run for their money with this exciting new production!
